Forbes House began its life in eighteen ten as a five-bay mansion named Mortimer House. It was designed by Sir Robert Smirke, the same architect responsible for the British Museum. The building grew over the following century as new owners added bays to the structure in eighteen twenty-four and again in nineteen-twelve. These expansions remain visible today through the varying hues of brick used in the masonry.
