Great Ormond Street Hospital began in eighteen fifty-two inside a small seventeenth-century townhouse with just ten beds. Dr. Charles West founded the institution because he noticed that London lacked any hospital focused on the unique medical needs of children. It stands as the first hospital dedicated entirely to pediatric inpatient care in the English-speaking world.
