Mecklenburgh Square

Mecklenburgh Square sits as a quiet, private enclave on the eastern edge of Bloomsbury. Its central garden remains shielded by high hedges and locked gates, a contrast to the bustling city streets that hem it in. This two-acre green space was laid out between eighteen-ten and eighteen-twelve. It features towering London plane trees that have stood since the garden’s earliest days. While many London squares feel like public thoroughfares, this garden operates as a secluded retreat, accessible only to local residents and members of the nearby Goodenough College. In the nineteenth century, the garden’s trustees even employed a dedicated beadle to patrol the grounds and keep out unwanted visitors from the surrounding Gray's Inn Road.
