Tavistock Square

Tavistock Square was laid out shortly after eighteen hundred and six on land owned by the Dukes of Bedford. The square takes its name from the Marquess of Tavistock, a courtesy title held by the eldest sons of that ducal family. Its development was a joint project between the prolific property developer James Burton and the master builder Thomas Cubitt, who transformed the area into a quintessential example of Bloomsbury architecture.
