Southwark Playhouse

Southwark Playhouse began in nineteen ninety-three inside a disused mechanics workshop. Founders Juliet Alderdice and Tom Wilson chose the site because the area was then largely neglected, giving them the space to build a low-cost, accessible venue for emerging artists. They envisioned a creative hub that would provide a platform for new writing while simultaneously serving the local community through free educational programs. The theatre has since defined itself as a resilient, peripatetic institution, forced to relocate multiple times due to urban redevelopment projects in the neighborhood. Each move has required them to adapt to new, often unconventional spaces, reinforcing their reputation as a powerhouse of fringe theatre that prioritizes high-quality storytelling over established commercial trends.
