Bascule Chamber at Tower Bridge

You are approaching the Bascule Chamber, a cavernous, subterranean space hidden deep beneath the iconic towers of Tower Bridge. While the bridge is famous for its rising road, the real mechanical work happens here, in the belly of the structure. Each of the two chambers houses the movement of massive four-hundred-ton counterweights, which swing downward into these voids whenever the bridge leaves are raised to let ships pass. These chambers are essentially the bridge's heartbeat, buried below the water line to manage the immense weight of the twelve-hundred-ton bascules above.
