The Fossil Tree

historic

The Fossil Tree at Brompton Cemetery is not a living plant, but a petrified fragment of ancient history. It is a large, fossilized stump from the Carboniferous period, estimated to be roughly three hundred million years old. This remnant of a primitive conifer was discovered in the nineteen hundreds and placed here as a permanent monument. Its presence amidst the Victorian architecture and modern memorial gardens serves as a reminder of the deep geological time that predates even the oldest monuments in the cemetery.
