Noël Coward Theatre

The Noël Coward Theatre exists because of a surplus of land. In the late nineteenth century, the actor-manager Charles Wyndham purchased a plot of ground to build a new theatre, but the space proved larger than he required. When he failed to sell off the excess portion, he simply decided to construct a second venue on the site. This second building, which opened in March 1903, was originally named the New Theatre and stood directly behind Wyndham's Theatre. The two venues were physically linked by a bridge and shared a single stage door for their performers.
