St Clement Danes

religious

St Clement Danes stands on a historical island in the middle of the road, a remnant of a ninth-century settlement founded by Danish migrants. These early residents, who had converted to Christianity, built a church dedicated to Saint Clement, the patron saint of mariners. You can still see the symbolic connection to this legend today in the anchor crest displayed by the main entrance, which references the saint's martyrdom at sea.
