Statue of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Victoria Embankment

You are standing before a bronze figure of the legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Sculptor Baron Carlo Marochetti finished this statue in eighteen sixty-one, but it remained in storage for over fifteen years before it was finally unveiled here on the Victoria Embankment in eighteen seventy-seven. The monument was designed as an ensemble, with a Portland stone pedestal and a flanking architectural screen created by the architect Richard Norman Shaw. Brunel stands in a casual pose holding a pair of dividers, looking out over the water as if he is still calculating the demands of a project. The location is fitting because Brunel himself planned and supervised the construction of the Victoria Embankment where he now stands.
