Bow Street Magistrates' Court and Police Station

This building stands as the cradle of modern policing. In seventeen forty, magistrate Thomas de Veil began holding court in his own home on this street, at a time when London relied on ineffective night watchmen nicknamed Shiver and Shake. The novelist and playwright Henry Fielding later took over, hiring a small, dedicated group of constables to actively pursue criminals. These men became known as the Bow Street Runners, forming the first organized law enforcement service in the city and shifting the approach to justice from mere reactive neighborhood patrol to professional investigation.
