The Phoenix Garden sits on a patch of land with a violent history. During the Second World War, a German bomb struck this exact site in nineteen-forty, leaving behind a scarred expanse of rubble. For decades afterward, the crater and the surrounding debris were paved over and repurposed as a humble car park. It was only in nineteen-eighty-four that local residents reclaimed the land, clearing the asphalt to plant the first seeds of what would become a rare sanctuary of greenery in the heart of the West End.
