You are standing on what was once the three-acre footprint of the Middlesex Hospital, a medical institution that served this neighborhood for two hundred and sixty years. Founded in 1745 as a tiny fifteen-bed infirmary in a pair of terraced houses on Windmill Street, the hospital eventually expanded to become one of the most prominent teaching hospitals in London.
