Statue of Władysław Sikorski

The larger than life bronze figure you see standing on this traffic island at Portland Place commemorates Władysław Sikorski, a pivotal wartime leader who served as the Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Polish government-in-exile during the Second World War. Sculpted by the British artist Faith Winter, this memorial was erected through public subscription and officially unveiled by the Duke of Kent in the year 2000. It occupies a prominent position near the Polish Embassy, reflecting the deep ties between the Polish government and their British allies during the struggle against Nazi occupation.
