Islington Tunnel

The Islington Tunnel remains a major feat of nineteenth century engineering, stretching over nine hundred and sixty yards directly beneath the hilly terrain of Islington. Because the steep incline of the local geography made traditional locks impractical, builders constructed this perfectly straight tunnel to carry the Regent’s Canal underground. Completed in 1818, the structure required four million bricks to line the arch, creating a subterranean passage that successfully connected London to the wider canal network.
