St Mary's Gardens

St Mary's Gardens is a triangular garden square defined by its collection of early Victorian terraced houses. These residences were built by the Walcot Estate in the late eighteen thirties to replace earlier structures on the site. The land itself has a history of charitable ownership dating back to sixteen sixty-seven, when a local haberdasher named Edmund Walcott bequeathed the area to support the poor of the local parishes. Because of the unconventional shape of the land, the houses follow the street's perimeter, creating an intimate, enclosed green space that has remained a quiet residential enclave for nearly two centuries.
