Calthorpe Community Garden

The Calthorpe Community Garden exists today because local residents refused to let a massive office complex dominate their neighborhood. In the nineteen sixties, a developer purchased the land and cleared it for construction, but the company went bankrupt after only laying the initial foundations. When Camden Council later attempted to sell the vacant plot for more office space in the early nineteen eighties, residents organized a fierce campaign involving petitions and delegations to stop the sale. Their persistence succeeded in nineteen eighty-three when the council agreed to dedicate the land to public use, transforming a site once scarred by construction debris into the neighborhood green space you see now.
