Joe Strummer plaque

historic

The legacy stone here marks the site of a former squat at one hundred and one Walterton Road. It was within these walls in the mid nineteen seventies that a young musician named Joe Strummer lived among a group of fellow squatters. This house provided both a home and a rehearsal space, where the band they formed, the one hundred and one ers, practiced in the basement using old mattresses to dampen the sound. The band took their name directly from the address of this very building.
