You are standing before the Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner, a monument that fundamentally broke the rules of commemorative art when it was unveiled in nineteen twenty-five. While most war memorials of the era favored allegorical figures like angels or weeping women to represent sacrifice, this structure chose to face the reality of industrialized warfare head-on. Atop its massive stone pedestal sits a full-size, nine-point-two-inch howitzer carved entirely from Portland stone. The choice to render such a destructive machine in stone was intentionally jarring, designed to confront viewers with the raw, brutal power that defined the experience of those serving in the Royal Regiment of Artillery.
