In August 2010, police arrived here to perform a welfare check on Gareth Williams, a brilliant mathematician and code breaker who was on secondment to the Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6. Inside a top-floor bathroom, they discovered his remains sealed inside a padlocked sports bag left in the bathtub. The sheer improbability of the scene, combined with the fact that the bag was locked from the outside with the key tucked inside, sparked an intense and lasting international investigation.
