Berwick Street Market

Berwick Street Market began in the late eighteenth century as a row of shopkeepers displaying their wares on the pavement to lure customers inside. These early merchants were often French Huguenots who had settled in Soho to build new lives. By the seventeen seventies, the local authorities were already taking notice of these bustling, improvised displays, even summoning several brokers to warn them about the clutter. What started as a simple extension of storefronts eventually evolved into one of the oldest and most enduring street markets in London.
