Foyles began in nineteen oh three when brothers William and Gilbert Foyle failed their civil service examinations. Rather than viewing this as a setback, they turned their stack of now-useless study textbooks into a business opportunity by selling them from their kitchen table. The venture was an immediate success and quickly expanded into a physical shop, launching a retail career that spanned over a century at this iconic address on Charing Cross Road.
