Lord John changed the face of London retail when it opened in nineteen sixty-three on the corner of Carnaby Street and Ganton Street. Founded by brothers Warren, Harold, and David Gold, the boutique grew from their humble beginnings selling suede jackets at a market stall on Petticoat Lane. They immediately faced legal trouble from a neighboring shopkeeper who claimed the name infringed on his existing business, but the brothers persisted and established a brand that defined the Mod look for a generation of young men. It stood out as a primary destination for musicians including The Who, The Small Faces, and Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, who all maintained accounts to keep their wardrobes current with rapidly changing trends.
