Oxford and Cambridge Club

The Oxford and Cambridge Club stands on Pall Mall as a monument to the endurance of academic fellowship. During the Second World War, a German parachute mine fell directly into the club kitchen, but the device failed to detonate, sparing the historic structure from the destruction that claimed so many other buildings in London. This stroke of luck preserved a prime example of Greek Revival architecture, designed by Sir Robert Smirke, who also famously served as the architect for the British Museum.
