BFI Gallery

The BFI Gallery was a dedicated contemporary art space located within the BFI Southbank complex from 2007 until 2011. It functioned as a specialized venue where filmmakers and visual artists blurred the lines between cinema and gallery art. During its four years of operation, it served as a laboratory for the moving image, commissioning experimental works and hosting retrospectives for renowned figures like the filmmaker Michel Gondry and the choreographer Yvonne Rainer. When the gallery closed, the space was repurposed to house the BFI Reuben Library, but the initiative left a lasting mark on how the institute engages with unconventional forms of film.
