BFI Southbank

The British Film Institute Southbank occupies a unique position directly beneath the concrete arches of Waterloo Bridge. This location was not chosen by accident, as the site was developed following the success of the Festival of Britain in nineteen fifty-one, which first introduced a temporary cinema pavilion to this stretch of the riverbank. When the current permanent structure opened in nineteen fifty-seven, it was designed to integrate seamlessly into the heavy industrial infrastructure of the bridge above. The architecture remains a defining example of how post-war planners repurposed overlooked urban voids into hubs for public culture.
