The Young Vic began its life as a supposedly temporary structure built on a World War II bomb site. When it opened in 1970, the theatre was constructed from simple breeze blocks and incorporated a former butcher shop and bakery that had survived the Blitz. The original plan expected the building to last only five years, yet it remains on The Cut today as a permanent cultural fixture.
