Roy Kepler founded this store in nineteen fifty-five, when he decided that a community needed a space for political debate and literature outside of a university setting. He filled the shelves with titles that major retailers ignored, creating a hub for local activists. Joan Baez famously worked the cash register here for a time, helping to pay the rent while she established her music career.
