Cooper-Molera Adobe

The Cooper-Molera Adobe features long, white-washed exterior walls and a deep, covered porch that spans the length of the building. Built in the eighteen thirties by John Rogers Cooper, a sea captain from Massachusetts, the structure combined New England timber-frame construction with traditional California adobe bricks. During the Mexican-American War, American sailors hauled cannons onto the property to secure the town. Later, the family hid their most valuable possessions in the attic to keep them safe from looting soldiers.
