The concrete ruins jutting from the sand at San Carlos Beach are remnants of the Hokkoku cannery. During the nineteen thirties and forties, this shoreline hummed with the noise of machines processing sardines caught by the local fleet. When the schools of fish vanished in the late nineteen forties, the industry collapsed. The heavy steel and concrete structures stood abandoned for decades, slowly reclaimed by the tides. Now, these foundations serve as a perch for cormorants instead of conveyor belts.
