The Monterey Canning Company building features a distinctive, windowless concrete wall facing the street, a stark departure from the typical wooden structures that once lined the waterfront. This facility processed sardines during the height of the Cannery Row boom in the nineteen thirties. Workers inside packed thousands of fish daily into cans destined for international markets. By the late nineteen forties, the sardine population vanished from the bay, leaving the machines silent and the industry to collapse almost overnight.
