McAbee Beach

McAbee Beach is a sliver of sand tucked between the rusted remnants of Monterey’s industrial past and the churning bay. It bears the name of John McAbee, a local who operated a tent city here in the early twentieth century. Visitors paid a few dollars a month to live in canvas structures right on the water. When the sardine canning industry boomed, the tents vanished to make room for the smoke and noise of the factories that defined the town for decades.
