The harbor seal observation area is a stretch of rocky shoreline where the coastline dips into a sheltered cove. Each spring, female harbor seals haul themselves onto these jagged rocks to give birth and nurse their pups. Before this area earned its protection, the constant foot traffic and noise kept the animals away from their traditional pupping grounds. Local volunteers now stand guard here during the season, holding back crowds so the seals have enough silence to raise their young in peace.
