Larkin House

The Larkin House features thick, white adobe walls and a second-story wooden veranda that wraps around the building. Built in eighteen thirty-five by Thomas Oliver Larkin, it serves as the prototype for the Monterey Colonial architectural style. Larkin, the only United States Consul to Alta California, used this home to conduct secret diplomatic meetings while California remained under Mexican rule. He famously hosted visitors like William Tecumseh Sherman, who slept in the upstairs bedroom while stationed in the territory as a young lieutenant.
