A concrete fountain sits at the center of Simoneau Plaza, surrounded by low brick walls that double as benches. This small downtown space bears the name of Joe Simoneau, a local plumber who spent his retirement years cleaning the streets and tending the gardens of Monterey long before the city officially recognized his efforts. He eventually became a local icon for his dedication to the public space. When the city developed this plaza in the nineteen eighties, they chose to honor his volunteer spirit.
