Casa Soberanes

Casa Soberanes stands out with its low-slung, whitewashed adobe walls and a steep, shingled roof that sits uncommonly heavy for a Monterey home. Built in eighteen thirty, it served as a family residence for over a century. When Maria Soberanes finally moved out, she left the house exactly as it was, including the furniture and the lace doilies on the tables. A single silver dollar remains embedded in the plaster wall near the front door, placed there by a nineteenth-century gambler.
