The Plaza de Panama centers on a large, circular fountain ringed by white Spanish Colonial Revival facades. This space served as the main entrance for the nineteen fifteen Panama California Exposition, designed to celebrate the opening of the canal. Architect Bertram Goodhue filled the plaza with ornate carvings of ships and sea creatures to honor the maritime achievement. In nineteen seventeen, a performer named Ruth St. Denis danced here, bringing an unexpected touch of modern art to the rigid, historic Spanish stage.
