The Alcázar Garden features a geometric layout of clipped boxwood hedges and bright, blooming flowers that mirror the formal gardens of Spain. It was built for the nineteen thirty-five California Pacific International Exposition, replacing an earlier, simpler arrangement to provide a grand entrance to the nearby Fine Arts Palace. Architect Richard Requa designed the space, choosing to model the tile fountains and intricate patterns after those in the Alcázar of Seville, creating a pocket of Spanish Renaissance style in San Diego.
