The California Tower rises above the Museum of Us with a crown of blue and yellow tiles that shine against the coastal sky. Built for the nineteen fifteen Panama-California Exposition, the building served as the centerpiece to showcase San Diego to the world. When the fair ended, organizers planned to demolish it, but residents fought to keep the structure standing. It remains an ornate relic of a time when the city gambled its future on a temporary dream that refused to leave.
