It serves as the gateway to a district once dominated by the tuna fishing industry. In nineteen thirty, Italian immigrants filled these blocks with net mending shops and family homes. When the industry collapsed in the eighties, the neighborhood faced demolition for a highway project, but the residents successfully campaigned to save their streets from the wrecking ball.
