Piazza Basilone

historic

Piazza Basilone features a bronze statue of a man in full combat gear, his hand resting on a heavy machine gun. This small park honors John Basilone, a local son who became the only enlisted Marine to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross during the second world war. He grew up nearby and headed off to the Pacific, where he held off thousands of Japanese soldiers on Guadalcanal before dying on Iwo Jima. The statue keeps watch over the intersection.
