This carrier served the United States Navy for forty-seven years, beginning its service just days after the end of World War Two. During the Vietnam War, pilots flying from this very deck achieved the first air-to-air victory of the conflict. It stayed in commission until nineteen ninety-two, eventually finding its final home here as a floating maritime museum.
