Public Art "Embracing Peace"

monument

The sculpture Embracing Peace stands twenty-five feet tall, a massive bronze recreation of the famous nineteen forty-five photograph showing a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square. It occupies a spot along the Embarcadero, placed here to honor the sailors who passed through San Diego during the second world war. Sculptor Seward Johnson spent years crafting these figures to capture the spontaneity of the original moment. People often gather at the base to pose for photos, mimicking the sailor and nurse.
