Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground Park

landmark

The playground you are approaching is named for Willie Wong, a local basketball star who grew up playing on these very concrete courts in the nineteen forties. Standing only five feet five inches tall, he earned his distinctive nickname when crowds would chant woo woo every time he successfully scored. He eventually became the first Chinese American to play basketball at Madison Square Garden while competing for the University of San Francisco.
