You are approaching Echoes, a striking fifty-five-foot-long steel sculpture that depicts a one-year-old blue whale. Created by the artist and researcher Mathias Gmachl, this installation serves as a life-sized representation of one of the ocean's most vulnerable inhabitants. The sculpture uses a skeletal steel design to evoke the whale's form, featuring distinctive stripes along its body that mirror the natural belly folds of the animal. It is designed to act as a bridge between the urban environment of the Embarcadero and the vast, often unseen marine world beneath the surface of the bay.
