Musical Stairs

The Musical Stairs at Pier 39 are an interactive art installation that transforms ordinary movement into a collaborative musical performance. Each step you take on these stairs triggers both sound and light, allowing you to compose a unique melody as you navigate between levels. The installation was created by artist Remo Saraceni, who is also known for inventing the iconic giant floor piano featured in the 1988 film Big. These stairs were installed at the pier in June 2013 as a way to encourage physical activity through play. By turning a standard transit point into an instrument, the stairs invite visitors to experiment with rhythm and harmony while moving through the bustling pier.
