Fort Funston

Fort Funston sits atop windswept cliffs that define the southwestern edge of San Francisco. Before the United States military acquired this land in 1900, the entire western half of the peninsula was covered by a massive, shifting sand dune ecosystem. Today, Fort Funston preserves the last significant remnants of those natural dunes, providing a rare glimpse into the landscape as it existed before the city was developed.
