Battery Bluff

Battery Bluff occupies a space that was once severed from the rest of the Presidio by the roar of a high-speed freeway. For decades, the six-lane Doyle Drive acted as a concrete barrier, cutting off the historic hillside from the waterfront at Crissy Field. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake proved the old roadway was seismically unstable, a decades-long effort began to bury the traffic. Today, those cars move through tunnels deep underground, allowing the land above to be reclaimed as a six-acre park that reconnects the landscape.
