The All Is Well Bell stands as a striking centerpiece in the First Responder Plaza, right here in the heart of Mission Bay. You will find it suspended from a large, bright red arch that intentionally contrasts with the surrounding modern city architecture. The artist behind this installation, Paul Kos, crafted the piece as part of a trio of motifs intended to honor the essential work of police, fire, and paramedic services. While the bell itself serves as a focal point, it is only one element of the plaza. A seven point star made of black granite lies on the ground, symbolizing core values like truth, justice, and fortitude, while a living conifer serves as a natural flag pole. Kos chose to incorporate the bell after visiting various fire department museums and repair shops, where he became captivated by the long history of bells as tools for communication and safety in emergency services. The name of the sculpture itself alludes to the old nautical tradition of the ship's bell, which was rung throughout a watch to keep time and signal that all was secure.
