The LeRoy King Carousel is a piece of living history that narrowly avoided destruction more than once. Master builder Charles Looff finished this hand-carved masterpiece in nineteen oh six, just as the Great Earthquake struck San Francisco. The disaster forced the carousel to be shipped to Seattle instead, where it miraculously survived a massive fire that incinerated the rest of its amusement park home in nineteen eleven. It finally returned to San Francisco to operate at the beloved Playland-at-the-Beach until that park closed in the nineteen seventies.
